Introduction

I’ve been lucky enough to spend a week trying out Krusell’s case for my Tungsten T3- it’s no longer my day-to-day PDA, but I was more than happy to take it around with me and use it whilst I evaluated this leather case.

 T3 buttons

The case is a very snug fit, and I wondered at first whether I was actually going to be able to insert the T3 successfully. I’ve noticed this particular trait before, and it tends to show good quality workmanship- whilst the case will give slightly with usage, it is unlikely to become too loose to retain the PDA successfully, and thus is very well thought out and executed. The fit is virtually perfect, giving access to the T3’s buttons and D-pad, whilst protecting the lower corners of the machine.

 T3 left T3 base T3 right

The sides of the case, other than the bottom slider section, are not covered, however- these are left open to the elements, and so I’d make my usual comment of not dropping this case into a pocket with keys or coins. The backplate of the case overlaps the edge of the T3, so, if you were unfortunate enough to drop it on a side, it should survive relatively intact, although I would not be in a hurry to test this out.

 T3 open

When the case is open, you are able to pull up the top section (or pull down the slider, depending on how you want to look at it), and use the machine in full-screen mode – no point in having a wonderful large screen if you aren’t able to use it to its full when you want. Whilst you can use a cable to charge the T3 in this case, providing it is not clasped shut, you cannot use the T3’s cradle- the leather is too thick to let it connect properly.

 Clasp

The case is secured shut via a push-fastener, which does its job very well – there is absolutely no chance of this case coming open accidentally. Unlike most cases which have just the one female clasp, Krusell has decided to place two on the back of their cases. As such, if you have no SD cards / credit cards in the slots, you can use the higher of the two slots, whilst, if you want to store extra memory cards, or business cards, you might have to use the lower of the slots. By having two, you prevent both forcing the cards against the screen of your PDA, or else leaving the front flap too loose.

 Card holder

The inside of the front flap houses space for two SD cards and two credit-sized cards. The SD card slips neatly into the slot without too much force- it was no where near as tight as the slots on the Horizontic case. The depth of the slot, however, gives me no reason to believe that they would accidentally fall out, and, indeed, even when I shook the case whilst upside-down and open, neither the SD card nor the card for a Chinese restaurant in Slough moved at all.

Fixed to the back of the case is one of the most unobtrusive clip attachments I have seem to date- the MultiDapt attachment is the connection for other elements of the MultiDapt range, which I have discussed here.

Conclusion

This is a well-made and desirable case for the T3. It fits the contours of the machine perfectly, and does not impede operation at all – you are able to access all the buttons, with the exception of the reset hole in the back. As the sides of the case are open, you can attach an audio jack without a problem, but, you probably don’t want to drop this case into a pocket with other metal / sharp objects. The flap holding the case shut covers the connector on the base of the machine, which should protect it from damage, if not from dust and sand. The MultiDapt is a very useful adapter, but is small enough to remain unobtrusive if you have no plans to attach the case to anything; similarly, I think that the dual clasps are a clever and sensible idea, although, they may not appeal to users who prefer magnetic clasps, which can be easier to secure, but also slightly easier to open accidentally. For £20 (price on Expansys- you can’t buy directly through Krusell, so you might be able to find it from a cheaper reseller elsewhere), I think you are getting a good case, made of quality leather and with a high standard of workmanship. Certainly worthy of a look.
