Iambic Agendus Versus DateBK5

Agendus v DateBO5

All right, so I did not necessarily NEED a date book replacement for my PDA, but it is just that the stock Palm application is just…. well, PLAIN. It is not color nor is it Hi-Res+. I decided it was time for an upgrade. So my saga begins.

I had been hearing quite a bit about this DateBK5 program. It is Hi-Res+ (to satisfy the needs of my Clie NR70V) and it was color. There are also some pretty nifty icons that go along with it. So I downloaded it. It came with a 45-day trial period. I was VERY impressed with that. Some apps you get like 5 days to work with. DateBK5 pleased me right off the bat. Now the app was on my Clie.

I tapped on the icon, and whirled myself into this powerful little program. I was exactly sure what to do with everything, so I downloaded the 100-page manual. That was not a typo. It is 100 pages long! It was very detailed and precise, as one should expect from a manual of this size.

I entered my first appointment. I could from any time that I wanted to, not just from every five minutes as in the stock address book. And then there were fonts to pick from. There was small, small bold, large, and large bold. You could also have your choice of a font color and a color for the background of the words! You could also set and alarm for the event, a much needed feature in any address book.

What would a date book be without a list of your to-dos? Any to-dos that you might have sit atop all of your appointments. You can also pick a color for them and a background, just as in the date book part of the program.

I only have one real complaint with DateBK5. Maybe it’s just me, but I think the interface is a little plain. It just doesn’t appeal to me all that much. But really, the positives out way that negative!

There are many other features of DateBK5 that I’m not going to get to, but I suggest that you download it and see for yourself how DateBK5 can help you out.

Cost: $25.
Pros: Hi-Res+, Stable, and Powerful
Cons: Interface is a little on the plain side

And now on to Iambic Agendas. This app came with a 3-day full trial period, but with a key, you could unlock a 30-day trial period. This was nice, and I thoroughly enjoyed the trial.

I have to say right off the bat that I love the Agendas interface. Everything is laid out, and it is very pleasing to my eye, unlike the slightly (that’s an understatement) dull appearance of DateBK5. On the main screen there a dividing line, with all of the day’s appointments on the top and your to-dos on the bottom half of the screen. Agendas is Hi-Res+, so you have full view of your day’s info.

One thing that I really wish Agendas had the DateBK5’s font color features. You can color code your different types of to-dos and what not, but you can’t put a background color in. You also don’t have the choice of quite as many different fonts in Agendus, although you can make the fonts larger and bigger.

I did like the built in address book in Agendas better than that of DateBK5’s. In DateBK5, the address book is across the top of the page. In Agendas, the address book has a whole other screen, where your contacts are in alphabetical order. This is a very nice feature.

Just like in DateBK5, you can also have your choice of different icons; although there is mostly likely more to pick from if you won DateBK5.

I really don’t have any other complaints about Agendas. I believe it is a very well rounded application.

Cost: $24.95
Pros: Hi-Res+, Powerful Address Book, Lots of Eye-Candy
Cons: Lack of fonts and colors

So…which is MY pick? Well, for sheer power, DateBK5 wins my vote. But for power and a pleasing interface (important to me) I would go for Agendas. My final pick is (drum roll) Iambic Agendas!

Quite a few people might disagree with me on this choice, but it really comes down to personal preference. Both apps are GREAT!

My suggestion for you is to GO OUT AND TRY THEM FOR YOURSELF!!!! You will fall in live with one or the other!!
