Covertec Clie NX series case review by Shaun McGill (photographs taken with Clie NX70V / images from www.covertec.com)

Covertec

I have been lucky enough to review a few Clie accessories over the past year and was recently approached by Covertec to do a review of one of their cases. I advised them that I could give no guarantees of a positive review and that the review would be published even if I did not like their product.

Their response was simple- "You will like it". And boy were they right!

I have spent the past few days with the Clié NX series case which retails for $44.59

Packaging

Packaging

It seems to be normal now for PDA cases to come in elaborate packaging and Covertec have struck a nice balance between giving a good first impression without going over the top. You get a simple black/brown cardboard case with a stylish logo on the front and 2 pieces of protective foam- what more do you need?

Looks

Covertec

The picture above tells it's own story- it is a beautiful looking case which just looks so much more expensive than $44 (I would recommend the 'gold' colour). The quality of the leather is excellent with a professional understated look and as you can see above the white stitching adds a nice contrast to the overall design.

A big surprise was the interior leather which is even nicer- it's a light cow-hide colour (see below) and is soft enough to protect your Clie whilst looking just perfect. Despite my arrogance I have to bow down on this one and say that even I could not have done better. smile

Interior

Practicality

Although I have never really been a fan of 'flip' cases it is almost impossible to buy a good quality NX case at the moment with a wallet side opening- even Vaja have no current plans to make such an item. I guess the shape of the NX does not help in designing one.

My main objection with flip cases is the lack of space for extras such as credit cards, money etc. Again, Covertec have surprised me here- they seem to have found a way to cram as many extras in as possible.

Crammed In!

Above is a picture showing what I currently have in the front flap of the case:-

2 Memory Sticks
3 Credit Cards
3 Business Cards
£50.00 cash
1 Chrome Stylus

That is an amazing amount of stuff to fit into a case this size- even better the memory sticks and credit cards do not cause any real pressure to be exerted on the Clie when it is shut. The addition of a stylus holder is a nice touch and even adds to the case's overall look when a chrome stylus is inserted.

The magnetic closure is very strong- when you can hang a full set of car and door keys from it you know it's strong enough to not come open accidently- it's sad I know but I like to test these kind of things smile

Despite so many items in the front flap the case still manages to have smaller exterior dimensions than almost every other NX case I have seen.

Conclusions

This case really has surprised me and I will be asking Covertec for more items to review in the future- their catalogue (and web site) hold an impressive array of PDA related items. Annoyingly I have not been able to find any faults at all although I would like to see the reset and speaker holes centered more and a mesh covering the speaker hole would be nice to save dust getting in.

I mentioned in my review of the Piel Frama NX case that it was the best case I had ever seen and it's price of £38 was astonishing. Has the Covertec case beaten it? YES- purely for the fact that a lot of thought has gone into it's design and it just looks sooooooo smart!!!

Pros
Looks
Price
Practicality (holds so much)
Stylus holder (nice touch)

Cons
None at all

I would be VERY surprised if you not satisfied with the case and would 100% recommend it. It's dangerous for me to say that but I am confident you will agree if you take the plunge.
