Introduction

The Calendaric case for the Tungsten T3 is one of the most sophisticated-looking cases I have seen- a combination of the shiny black leather, with a shiny brown leather side-panel, and an excellent design, with attention to detail.

 Case in box

The case

The case is only slightly bigger than the T3 itself, in terms of area, although the added thickness does make it noticeably larger if you keep your PDA into your pocket. However, if you were to drop the case onto a flat surface, I would be surprised if any part of the PDA made contact- despite moving the T3 around inside the case, I was only ever able to make the stylus protrude, and so I would be happy with the level of protection from scratches picked up from dropping the machine in the case. The record button on the left of the machine (and the headphone jack) are left accessible, as is the entire top edge, which is good from a usability point of view, but will mean that, like so many others, this case is probably best not left in a pocket with other metal objects, as they could scratch the PDA.

Top of case Left of case Base of case

The case is secured with a decent magnetic clasp, which holds the case firmly closed- unlike the MultiDapt cases, there is only one female clasp, and thus only one closed position.

The case opens like a book, and the T3 sits on the left hand side. “Sits” is not really the right term, as there is a receptacle for the lower part of the slider, and also an ingenious elastic and leather retaining strap, which clips into the back of the T3. This means that even if you were to hold the case upside and shake it, your PDA will not fall out. It also makes things easier for opening the T3’s slider, as the PDA is not going to come out of the case. Attaching and removing the retaining strap is relatively easy, once you have got the knack of slotting the metal brackets into place, but is not something which will come undone accidentally, in my opinion. Because of this arrangement, the T3 is completely usable in this case, with the exception of the reset pin, although, it is possible to open the slider, and then pull down the top part of the retaining strap. The stylus is too big to fit into the hole at this angle, but a paper-clip or similar would be fine.

 Flap closed Flap open

On the right hand side of the case, there is a flap of leather, which flaps down over the card storage slots. This means that at no point can the SD cards (2) or business cards (2 slots) touch the screen of your PDA, unless you have pulled the flap upwards, so that it protrudes out the top of the case. I think that this is a clever and well-designed touch, ensuring that your PDA’s screen is protected as much as possible.

Conclusion

It’s hard to get across how good this case actually is – it is well-designed, beautifully made, and is a pleasure to use. If you are looking for a “luxury” case, I can honestly recommend you take a good hard look at this. As usual, you have to buy the case through a reseller, rather than from Krusell directly, and, I believe you should be able to get hold of the case for around £24- not much more than other, lesser, cases.
