Bejeweled v1.6 mini-review by David Eaton

Bejeweled v1.6

I have to admit that I am a little biased in writing this review. Bejeweled has long been a mainstay on my Palm handheld. When I got my NX70V for Christmas, the latest version for Sony sound was the first one game that I loaded.

But, ladies and gentlemen, is not your parent's Bejeweled! The brilliant colors and vibrant sound were much better than even I expected. So good, as a matter of fact, that my son asked if we could load a Palm emulator on my home PC so that he could play this version instead of the Windows version!!!

For those of you who may have lived the last couple of years in a cave, the object of this game is to swap the position of adjoining jewels to create groups of three or more in a straight horizontal or vertical line.

When matches are made, the matched jewels disappear and the ones above them fall to take their place. Points are given for each match with extra points awarded for larger groups or chain reactions.

There are a couple of ways in which to enjoy this game: easy mode, continuous mode, and timed mode. The easy mode lets you play until you run out of available moves. The timed mode pits you against the clock to see how many matches you can get in before time expires. Continuous mode is provided to just have fun: you just keep playing until your wife makes you stop. :)

You may also wish to tweak the game settings. You can adjust the sound, game speed, and graphics. (The enhanced graphics actually looked fuzzy on my Clie so I use the default gem set.) You can also tweak several areas of the game play itself such as whether all of the gems fall together or separate of each other.

When you download version 1.60 from www.astraware.com you are given a choice of 3 different files to enjoy depending on your screen, Palm OS version, and sound support. Be sure you load the correct one. (While the newer Clie models sport OS 5.0, the sound will not work correctly if you do not load the Sony version.)

The only real difference between the shareware version and the registered version is the ability to export your high scores onto Internet to compare with others. While I have not taken advantage of this feature, I would urge everyone to support the developer by registering it. The cost is well worth the investment.

I would strongly recommend this game to anyone and consider it my favorite Palm OS game of all time.
