Gavin’s Gadget – Sony Ericsson K700i

Welcome to my next review. The Sony Ericsson K700i mobile phone.

The Sony Ericsson K700i is a tri-band phone featuring a large, high-quality

65, 536 colour 65 TFT screen with 176x 220 pixels, a VGA camera that can also take video clips, integrated Bluetooth, GPRS and around 40 polyphonic ringtones. It is has an internal memory of approximately 40mb.

A feature of the K700i is its looks. From one side it looks like a camera, but turn it over and it’s a phone. Top marks for looks. See pictures.

Another feature is Quickshare. This allows you to take a picture and with a few simple clicks send the picture to anyone anywhere.

In addition the  K700i features a built-in FM radio. The radio allows you to store presets. It is also possible to minimize the radio and continue with another application. The stereo headphones supplied are reasonable and act as the aerial. The radio will not work without the headphones connected. The headphones also act as a handsfree. If you do not wish to wear the headphones you can play the radio through the phones loudspeaker, which is positioned under the camera lens.

The K700i also has an Media player, which plays MP3, MP4, 3GP, and WAV files.  Being a Sony Ericsson the music quality is fairly good even through the standard handsfree stereo headphones.

As a camera the pictures are well above average. (see samples below). You can adjust the lighting control if it is a dark areahe camera also has a built in flash/light. Other options include changing the picture size from 640x480 to 320x240x 160x120 or extended. There is also a night mode, special effects which include panorama, black & white, negative, sepia and solarize. Also there are 21 special effects . See pictures. These add some fun to the shots. The  video recording includes sound and has a 4 x digital zoom. The options are as per the camera mode except the 21 special effects.

The K700i includes the internet and email capabilities. To be honest, I use my Tungsten T3 for this functionality. I found that the built in  Palmone Sony Ericsson T610 driver works fine with the K700i when creating a Bluetooth connection. The specification of the browser is noted below in the technical summary. If anyone needs to know anymore on this then drop me an email.

On the entertainment front, the K700i is fully java enabled for both games and applications. It is features an amazing Music DJ for creating melodies etc… With my K700i Darts, Riverriders and Super Real Tennis games were included.

The phone also features a full organiser suite, which includes calander, tasks, notes, applications, alarms, timer, code memo, calaculator, stopwatch and timer. The phone address book , tasks and notes can be synchronised with a PC or PDA. A few features of the address book includes adding a picture to the contact and bespoke ringtone. I will soon try to sync my T3 with my K700i.

But here comes the real beauty of this phone, its file manager. Opening up the file manager includes folders for pictures, sounds, videos, themes, games, applications and other. When I connected my K700i to my PC via bluetooth, I opened up windows explorer and had the complete file manager and folders of my phone shown. I could then add, remove pictures , sound files etc.. It gets even better. If you add a sound file, say for example you favourite song as an MP3, you can use this either to play through your headphones or select as your ringtone. So its goodbye paying for ringtone downloads!!

The PC software includes synchronisation, MMS Home Studio, Image Editor, Mobile Networking wizard and Sound Editor. I have used the image editor which allows me to add custom photos to fit the phone screen exactly. The screen wallpaper and screen saver can have moving pictures.

The K700i has loads more functions. I haven’t even mentioned the SMS or MMS features or some of the enormous options in the other menus / functions.
